This week, Melanie MacLaren and Lorkin O’Reilly revealed the release of their EP, ‘Tadpole Emporium’, which caught our interest. The latest release corresponds with the pair’s current UK tour, during which they travel to different locations around the United Kingdom and Ireland.

‘Tadpole Emporium’ is rife with feeling, and the engaging way Melanie and Lorkin resonate with us makes the experience all the more intriguing. Each of the four songs on the new EP demonstrates how the duo when working together, are a formidable force thanks to their singular quality and the cohesive power they generate. ‘Clearance Aisle’ is the point at which everything gets started. It is a song which first took off for the first time as a single earlier in 2022. It boasts a folky pop acoustic edge that is appropriate for the current season. Also, it is endearing, and it enables us to feel a warmth that lasts for the duration of the experience.

Enticing

The second track on the EP is ‘King Kong’, and it continues investigating this enticing sound that the two musicians have been exploring. It kicks off with a bang, with drums tapping away alongside a synth that glides forth ahead of a mirrored vocal from Melanie and Lorkin, who both find their spot in the mix while singing the same melody word for word.

Melanie is in charge of ‘Sleeping With Headphones’. She leads us on a journey through wordplay and reflection. Furthermore, Melanie looks back on earlier moments with someone she holds very dear to her heart. The final tune on the EP is ‘My Idea’, on which Lorkin initially asks us whether we are ready. We respond by telling him that we are, in fact, very ready. Lyrically and musically, the song is the ideal way to conclude the extended play.
