‘Sharks’ by Imagine Dragons – Single Rating: 4/5 ★★★★☆

Imagine Dragons bring the fresh indie vibes to the fore of today’s music scene with their new single ‘Sharks’. Their contagious qualities welcome us with open arms, and the track leaps out of New Music Friday! It is from their soon-to-be-released ‘Mercury – Act 2’ album.

The song opens with an eerie guitar riff that reverberates throughout the mix, creating a sensation of panic that is eerily similar to the fear one might experience when confronted by a shark. A pounding bass line soon rises, along with a foot-tapping drum cadence and a stellar vocal performance by Dan Reynolds, which shows his passion for music is as strong as ever!

The song’s lyrics are a little ambiguous; it takes a few listens to understand what might be happening entirely. There is talk about sharks, and one would even consider the concept of putting themselves in the shark’s mouth, but is Dan talking about himself, or is he speaking about someone else? He argues that although many people frequently think of themselves as superior to others. But, they are just like everyone else in reality.

The tune gains pace as it moves along, and Dan Reynolds compounds the anguish in the final section by raising the intensity of his vocals. Also, the mix shifts in the latter, with chilling elements rising to the surface, making the encounter even more severe.
