Familia’ by Camila Cabello – Album Rating: 4/5 ★★

With her new album, ‘Familia’, Camila Cabello, the American-Cuban diva, takes centre stage. Moreover, the latest release from the Latin fusion pop musician is possibly her most compelling work to date, and in terms of third studio albums, this one is pretty damn good!

It represents Camila’s recent feelings, and given that it is her first major album release following her breakup with former flame Shawn Mendes, it is evident that it will be an emotional rollercoaster; it is just that!

The album opens with a trumpet solo dripping with a Cuban flavour, setting the tone for ‘Celia’. With a foot-tapping beat rising out of the mix with irresistible cadence, the second track is an instant earworm. Camila quickly emerges and demonstrates her star qualities with a genuine and inspiring vocal performance; she sings in Spanish, and even though we cannot understand her without a translator, she nevertheless captivates us with her zeal!

The album’s seventh track, ‘Boys Don’t Cry’, adds even more weight to the experience. Also, Camila candidly conveys the need to communicate emotions. She talks about expressiveness, stressing that it’s alright to vent and that she’ll be there as a shoulder to cry on; might this be an aim at Shawn Mendes?

After ten tracks, we reach ‘Don’t Go Yet’, one of the album’s most notable releases and one that has already spread like wildfire around the scene; it is quite the treat!
