Traps‘ by Bloc Party – Single Rating: 4/5 ★★★★

Bloc Party rock up to new music Friday with a bang! ‘Traps’, their latest single, is everything their devoted fans have been craving for quite some time. It’s brand new while simultaneously sounding like every other album the band has ever released, which is quite a treat, right?

This new single is their first in five years, and it confirms that they’re as up for it as they’ve always been. Indeed, some may claim that they sound more energetic than they have in recent times. Also, it is evident that the group have rediscovered the same vigour that they had when they initially emerged from the underground in 2005 with their hit album “Silent Alarm.”

The tune begins with a pounding drum fill and a thunderous guitar riff. It has a profound diatonic influence seeping into the tone. The overture is massive, and it’s a must-hear for everybody who likes the most energising rock juice! Kele Okereke, the band’s frontman, rises to the occasion quickly, smashing it with his trademark vocal approach from the first second. His vocals are reminiscent of a sound he introduced to the forefront of indie many years ago; he returns to his roots here. Similarly, the drums and guitar synergies flawlessly, akin to what we experienced in 2004 with ‘Helicopter.’

‘Traps’ will be on the group’s upcoming new album, ‘Alpha Games’, which will arrive on April 29th, 2022.
