He Said She Said’ by CHVRCHES – Single Rating: 4/5 ★★★★

He Said She Said‘ is the latest release to come from Glasgow electro-pop group, CHVRCHES. It is a release that empowers, and the compelling narrative is challenging to ignore.

Speaking about the demands of modern life, the band express a poignant narrative about keeping on top of unrealistic expectations. Also, frontwoman, Lauren Mayberry, explains the contradictory messages she receives from others, e.g. ‘Get drunk, but do no be a mess’, and ‘Look good, but do not be obsessed’. As a result, Lauren feels like she is losing her mind as she struggles to recognise what is right anymore; many will relate, sadly.

Vocals

Vocally, Lauren is on top form, and she smashes through her performance with fearless quality. Also, she introduces a more robotic effect on this delivery compared to her previous hits. Nevertheless, she allows her signature tone to break through the compound.

The music leaks energy from the very first second. Furthermore, the track opens with a rising synth lead before hitting the melting point with a sturdy drum foundation. The drum unleashes an innovative structure, and the rhythm often changes shape as the track progresses.

Also, the band delve deep into their electronic tool kit here, and they rise out with new elements which keep them at the forefront of the electronic scene. It also gives us an indication of what to expect with their upcoming tracks. Their last full-length album was in 2018 with ‘Love Is Dead‘.
