Mumford & Sons have announced there’s new material heading our way November 16. Album number 4 from the folk-rock quartet will be titled Delta and we’ve already had the pleasure of listening to their latest single Guiding Light, taken from the upcoming album in question. Written in a converted church (Church Studios) and produced by legendary Paul Epworth (Adele, Coldplay, Rihanna) Delta is set to be Mumford & Sons most definitive album yet.

The three-and-a-half-year hiatus can be explained by the band’s unflinching commitment to providing quality tunes over fast track releases. Guitarist Winston Marshall shared the band’s stance on creating a killer album:

“If you’re going to write an album of 10 songs, our attitude is that you need to write 30 and choose 10 f*****g good ones. We could probably put out a not-so-good album right now, but it’s better to wait and put out a great one.”

Guiding Light is certainly a ‘f*****g good one’. Premiered on Annie Mac’s Radio 1 show as Hottest Record in the World, it is signature Mumford guitar music, described by the band as “a dizzying folk-rock song that builds, builds, explodes and then explodes again”. With a focus on transforming the sound of their ‘old’ instruments (who doesn’t love a banjo) into something unexpected and unrecognizable, the outcome is “a record of differing shades, colours and textures.”

Working on Delta, the band have opened themselves up to new challenges and creative processes, moving away from the “insular” approach of their first three albums and towards a more open and outward-looking approach. South London MC Octavian, US soul singer Yebba, Oxford indie band Glass Animals and dance DJ Benji B are just a few of the names who have been welcomed into the studio.

“The collaboration can just be an anecdote that someone is telling, or a joke that they’re saying, and you just feel the energy of people around you,” Lovett told the BBC.

“It resets the room,” says Dwane. “It’s so amazing. People are awesome.”

Mumford & Sons are rumoured to be announcing details of a 60-date world tour to begin after the release of Delta in November.
