Colby: What Do You Enjoy Most About Being A Musician?

King Royal: I love being able to express myself within my music. I feel like there’s so much that goes on within life that I don’t talk about. I was never into social media like that, so you’ll never catch me on any rant on Twitter or Instagram. Everything that I’m going through or have gone through gets put in my music. I love that I’m able to inspire people off of my words and experiences. I’m for the people like crazy, so I love being able to connect and relate to my supporters. You don’t have to live where I live to relate to me. Pain and knowledge are both universal.

Colby: Which Track Of Yours Means The Most To You?

King Royal: I have so many unreleased songs that are going to be career-changing. I feel like all my songs mean a lot to me just because I was writing how I felt at that time. But if I had to name some songs that were major for me, I have to pick two from my last album ‘And It Was So’. ‘Ride W/ Me’ and ‘Worthy’ are two important songs. Ride W/ Me talks about the struggles we deal with as African Americans on a daily basis. Worthy talks about my personal struggles that are still highly relatable. I’m bringing real Hip-Hop back. I want you to listen to my words. I’m not just trying to make a catchy song and capitalize off of it. I’m really giving you a part of me.

Colby: The First-Ever Gig You Played, Can You Remember It? How Was It?

King Royal: The first gig I ever performed at was at a SigEp frat party in Riverside. They let me close out the event with a small 10-minute session but it was crazy. Those frat parties are wild. By the end of the event, everybody was drunk as hell, so they definitely were turned up by default. I even remember throwing in that song ‘You Guessed It’ by OG Maco into my set. That was back when that song just dropped and that shit was on fire and playing everywhere! I wanted to try and get the crowd to turn up with something familiar since they didn’t know who I was, so I threw that in the middle of the set and they lost it.

Colby:  What Do You Think Is The Key To Success As A Musician?

King Royal:I think the main key to maintaining your success as a musician is two things actually. First, I think you always have to stay true to yourself. People will always be able to recognize the fake versus the real. No gimmicks have ever sustained longevity. If you always give the people you’re 100% authentic self, whether they like it or not they have no choice but to respect it. That’s why I never want to hop on any record saying anything that’s false or claiming anything that I’m not. I just want to give people the truth. Lastly, I think it’s important to not only be versatile but to be able to adapt. This music industry is changing so fast year by year, and the ones who aren’t adapting to it I get it left behind. So if you can adapt to the times, you definitely have control over the people.

Colby: If You Wasn’t A Musician, What Job Would You Be Doing?

King Royal: Honestly my biggest dream was always just to have multiple forms of passive income. Even if I wasn’t doing music, I would still want to be some form of an entrepreneur to where my money would work for itself. I mean I went to school and got a degree in business so I’ve always had that mentality. So regardless of what it is, I need that money that works for me while I can just sit back and enjoy life, working, and creating other things, probably writing. All of the things I do now currently to support being a musician!
