Kanye West today apologised for his “lack of etiquette” after being criticised for using his phone during the opening night of a Broadway show about Cher’s life.

The rapper, who was in the audience for The Cher Show with wife Kim Kardashian was spotted on his mobile by one of the performers on stage.

Jarrod Spector, who plays Sonny Bono, tweeted from backstage: “Hey @kanyewest so cool that you’re here at  @TheCherShow!

“If you look up from your cell phone you’ll see we’re doing a show up here. It’s opening night. Kind of a big deal for us. Thanks so much.”

West then made a rare admission of guilt, tweeting: “The dynamics of Cher and Sonny’s relationship made Kim and I grab each other’s hand and sing “I got you babe,” followed by,”Please pardon my lack of etiquette. We have so much appreciation for the energy you guys put into making this master piece.”

A spokesman for the rapper claimed he was not texting, but was instead using his phone to take notes on the performance after being so impressed. Maybe his next album will be Cher inspired?

West attended the show with his wife, Kim Kardashian West, a well-known Cher fan.

Kardashian West has dressed as Cher for Halloween and in May traveled to Las Vegas to see the 72-year-old singer perform.

“I can’t take it @cher is seriously the most amazing beautiful person ever!!!” the reality TV star tweeted at the time.

Cher attended the performance at the Neil Simon Theater and sang If I Could Turn Back Time on stage during the curtain call.
