Guide
Jarboe’s new album “Sightings” arrives at a pivotal moment in her career, arriving as the 36th solo release in a prolific and uncompromising artistic journey. What makes this announcement particularly exciting is how she’s reshaping her upcoming tour around an unexpected collaboration that feels both necessary and entirely natural.
A Shift in Direction
When Thor Harris stepped away from the tour due to personal circumstances, it could have derailed everything. Instead, Jarboe paired up with Joy Von Spain from Eye of Nix, and what emerges is something genuinely special. This duo format forces a complete reimagining of her material, stripping things back to something more intimate and focused. You get the sense that this isn’t a compromise but rather an intentional move toward something deeper.
What “Sightings” Sounds Like
The album itself draws inspiration from the vireo, a small bird whose song you hear long before you actually spot it. That metaphor runs through the entire record. Electronic elements crash against organic instrumentation, moving seamlessly between dreamlike passages and moments of genuine experimental chaos. The Wire’s description of Jarboe as a “forward-thinking queen of unreality” fits perfectly here.
Collaborators including Thor Harris, Andrea Calderon, Brett Robinson, Chiara Lee, and Freddie Murphy contribute their own textures to the record. Phil Puleo, the experimental icon from Swans, painted the album artwork. These aren’t just names thrown together. Each voice adds something tangible to what feels like a genuinely collaborative exploration of sound and atmosphere.
The Tour Itself
The duo tour stretches across 19 dates from May 4th through May 27th, moving through Northern Europe and the UK. From Copenhagen to Athens, the shows promise something you won’t hear anywhere else. Jarboe and Von Spain will pull from her vast catalogue alongside material from “Sightings.” In venues ranging from small clubs to festival slots, this pairing will create interpretations that feel both fresh and deeply connected to what made her original recordings compelling in the first place.
“Sightings” is out now on Black LP, Moss Green LP, and digipack CD through Consouling Sounds, available across all major streaming platforms.
