California’ by Chvrches – Single Rating: 4/5 ★★★★

Chvrches are a band that will most likely stand the test of time. They are modern-day pioneers, and while borrowing hints from some of the finest electronic alt-pop acts to have emerged previously, they have managed to carve out their own niche. Furthermore, with their new single, ‘California,’ they strengthen their brand even further. The new track is from the band’s recent album, ‘Screen Violence’, which is available to stream now on all platforms.

‘California’ reflects the Scottish group’s talent and commitment to continuous improvement, and they do not disappoint here. The tune begins with a crunchy guitar rhythm that rings out ahead of an 80’s soaked drum rhythm as it prepares to unfold even further. Lauren Mayberry, the frontwoman, then reaches for the spotlight, and her trademark flavours punch us in the face for all the right reasons. She is as passionate as ever, and she boasts her delectable voice tones and strong local accent.

The song’s architecture is reminiscent of the new wave era, but there are plenty of new parts to keep things interesting. Lauren speaks openly about her experiences in Los Angeles, and the words cut deep into the soul. She talks of being trapped in the California dream, and her storey has an odd juxtaposition. Furthermore, she laments the complex realities of making it in the large city. But, argues that it is refreshing and that failing within a dream provides a sense of freedom.
