Conan Gray, the American singer-songwriter and former YouTube star, has just dropped his new track “Caramel” from his recently released album, “Wishbone”. Caramel” by Conan Gray hits different for me. The chords feel familiar but not boring, you know? Gray and Dan Nigro (the producer) threw in some interesting twists with suspended chords that catch you off guard. These harmonic shifts actually match how confused and uncertain the lyrics feel, which I think is pretty clever.
The tempo sits right around 100 BPM, which feels perfect for this song. It gives Conan space to really deliver his vocals without rushing and it still keeps things moving forward nicely.
What I find most intriguing is the production. Every layer has its place and nothing fights for attention. The electric guitar shines in the song with a warm, reverb-heavy sound that adds a lot of emotion. Sure, the mix gets a bit muddy in places, but honestly? It works. It gives the whole thing this dreamy quality.
The bass line deserves credit too. It’s not trying to show off or anything, just doing exactly what the song needs. Also, I cannot forget Conan’s vocals, what a treat!

Meaning (My Opinion) (Caramel Review)
Conan speaks about the lingering effects of a past relationship. He reflects both the pain and the nostalgia that remain long after it ends. Moreover, with his vivid imagery manages to capture the contrast between the hurt caused by broken promises and gaslighting, and also the sweetness of intimate memories, like soft kisses or shared moments. This duality emphasizes how relationships can leave a lasting imprint on memory, where love and betrayal coexist, creating a bittersweet emotional resonance that the narrator cannot easily escape. The repeated references to “caramel” symbolize this lingering sweetness, warm, and comforting sensation that continues to burn in the his mind despite the pain that is being caused; I can relate.
At its core, the song is about reconciliation with complex emotions as well as the difficulty of letting go. Conan oscillates between anger, sorrow, and desire, showing how past experiences can shape present feelings.
