Guide
Hello! Can you tell us about reuniting after being pulled apart by different life paths? What brought you all back together to form Artic Baba?
Hello! We started playing together at a very young age. In particular I know Angelo (the other guitar player and co-founder of ARTIC BABA) since we were born. We used to live in the same building and my father taught us to play guitar when we were about 6. We are relly like brothers. We started a band at 13 but after some years, as it happens in life, we chose different study carreer paths and then, consequently, professional paths as well.
Unfortunately playing together was not possible anymore at that time. Recently, some of these circumstances turned out being more favourable and having met by chance Ale (the bass player who was in our first band as teenagers) gave us the idea to have fun again and restart a band together. Then by chance I met Aldo (drums) and Valy some time later and everything seemed to get us ready for starting a band again.
How has Valentina’s addition as your lead vocalist changed the band’s dynamic and sound since she joined?
A lot! First, being a girl, she brought more discipline in the band. Besides that, she is an enthusiastic person and she really likes music. Her passion is an inspiration to us. Concerning the band’s sound she brought that Pop-ish part we needed. We are basically rock music fans and her contribution, in my opinion, made our music an interesting blend with different genres we usually do not listen to.
What was it like working with Angelo Sasso at Quarto Suono Studios for “No Man’s Land,” and how did that process shape the final track?
Angelo is our guitarist and therefore knows us deeply ah ah. We always write, arrange, record and produce our music on our own. We founded the Quarto Suono Studios since we are independent artists and wanted to take advantage of the perks of being independent. In the future we would like to collaborate with a producer who is outside the band but at the moment we are happy with our work, even if it’s not easy. With No man’s land, I think Angelo deeply understood the meaning of the song and was able to translate it into the final project, even though the process was quite long and not easy.
Your debut single “Mr. CRAZY” made it onto a GRAMMY ballot consideration album. How did that recognition impact your confidence as a band moving forward?
We do not think a lot about that. To be precise it was the full Bongo Boy Records Compilation Vol. XXII album that made it through to the first ballot. Mr. CRAZY was just part of it. Of course, it was an exciting surprise but we don’t think much about it or give eccessive meaning to what happened. As the song writer I cannot deny that it makes me think that I wrote something that was at least noticed by the music industry and that is pretty cool.
“No Man’s Land” features raw energy and powerful instrumentation. What themes or experiences inspired Luca to write this particular song?
Our songs are always inspired by what happens in our lives. That does not mean that necessarely everything happened directly to us but it is always something we experienced either directly or indireclty. In particular, No man’s land was inspired by the story of a person who is very close to us who experienced very tough times and finally gathered all her resources to find a way out of it and succeeded. That is why in the song rough and soft moments swap each other until the final liberation.
