Colby: What Do You Enjoy Most About Being A Musician?

Thomas: Just about everything. I need to be creative in my life and songwriting is a big part of that. I love to create something from nothing. I love to set lyrics to melodies. I love to come up with chord progressions. So the creative process is what I enjoy the most. I´m happy if I get to touch people with my songs but I write to keep myself happy. If somebody else appreciates what I do, I´m pleased. Obviously, there are a lot of lesser fun activities involved with managing your own label but we try to turn that into a creative process as well.

Colby: Which Track Of Yours Means The Most To You?

Thomas: Oh, that´s a tough one. I´m pleased with most of the songs we´ve done, really. Not always production or performance-wise but speaking of just the songwriting, I think we have a backlog of good songs.

From our new album ‘Funhouse Mirror’ I personally really dig the title track and Daniels’ ‘Death of a Poet’. I also love his epic album closer ‘Days’ and my own ‘Clock with No Hands’. From our previous albums some of my favorites are ‘Cool Swirl, Cruel World’, ‘Basket of Kisses’, ‘Ghost of England’, ‘Colorblind’, ‘Baton Rouge’ & ‘Diverging Paths’. All for different reasons.

Colby: The First-Ever Gig You Played, Can You Remember It? How Was It?

Thomas: Yes I remember it very clearly, actually. It was in the spring of 2001. Our band was called ‘Guernica’ back then. Consisting of Daniel and I and two former members. We were in our early twenties and rose from the ashes of two other high school bands we played in as youngsters. The gig was on a Friday night. It was a party held at the high school. The school had this huge lounge in the middle and the stage was set up in one of the wings. I remember we played for all our friends and it was a mix of own compositions and covers. I still have notes from the show. I´ve kept a diary through the years from all the stuff we´ve done.

Colby: What Do You Think Is The Key To Success As A Musician?

Thomas: I think that´s a very hard question to answer. We´re definitely still trying to figure that out ourselves, haha. Thinking of all the endless possibilities in our day and age, it´s kind of hard to navigate through the jungle. But I guess the key part is to be present on social media as much as you can and on as many platforms as you can. We´re still trying to figure it out since the digital world is moving so fast. And you’ve got to have good songs too, obviously. But to try and stand out from the masses, now, that´s another thing!

Colby: If You Wasn’t A Musician, What Job Would You Be Doing?

Thomas: I’m actually a school teacher, full-time. Music is what I do when I´m not doing my dayjob. I like my job. But maybe the question should be turned around. What would I do if I wasn´t a school teacher? Then I’d be a full-time musician. A musician with a pretty good pay, haha.
