In the early 1970s, Denis O’Regan smuggled a camera into concerts to photograph Paul McCartney and Queen. He was inspired to become a rock photographer the night he saw the Ziggy Stardust concert at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1973. Not only did this lead to O’Regan becoming Bowie’s tour photographer, it also proved he was a huge fan influencing his unique and personal photos of Bowie in a new book, titled “Ricochet : David Bowie 1983.” Bowie’s website states, “every image in ‘Ricochet : David Bowie 1983’ is personally approved by David Bowie.” There were 20,000 images to chose from this tour and Bowie helped hand pick which ones to finalize in this display before his passing in January of 2016.
Denis O’Regan toured with Bowie for 9 months in 1983 on his Serious Moonlight tour. The Serious Moonlight tour consisted of 100 gigs in 15 countries. One may recognize the relaxed and pleasant atmosphere of this busy tour as O’Regan states, “[Bowie] was very, very happy.” Starting in Brussels and ending in Hong Kong, this was known as one of Bowie’s longest and most successful tours of his career at this time.
“I think he was swept up in it. Everything was new to him, the stadiums were new, this sort of adulation was new, so he enjoyed every moment of it. Afterwards he thought: ‘I need to do something different,’ which of course he did.”
The package contains limited edition photographic prints and unique collectable extras. Many of the photos provide a candid insight of both the private and personal life of this legend. O’Regan succeeds in “getting behind the mask to offer us something unique and revealing.”
These unseen photographs will finally be released in May 2018 in a limited edition book of 2,000 releases individually weighing 15 kilos costing £3,000 each. During the autumn of 2018, the release of a smaller book of photographs is set. A potential gallery display of these images is being compiled by O’Regan for a later release.
O’Regan has toured round the world as a tour photographer of bands including the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Queen, and Duran Duran. O’Regan was also the official photographer for Live Aid.
