Tyler, the Creator has dropped a new EP inspired by the forthcoming Grinch reboot. Music Inspired by Illumination & Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch is a six-song EP that coincides with the release of the animated holiday film, which Tyler contributed two songs to: an original, “I Am the Grinch,” and his take on the classic “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.”

While neither of those appear on the new EP, there are new collaborations with Santigold, Ryan Beatty, and Jerry Paper. Check out “Lights On” featuring Santigold and Beatty here. Find the track list below:

  1. Whoville
  2. Lights On [ft. Ryan Beatty and Santigold]
  3. Hot Chocolate [ft. Jerry Paper]
  4. Big Bag
  5. When Gloves Come Off [ft. Ryan Beatty]
  6. Cindy Lou’s Wish

Titled: Music Inspired by Illumination & Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch, the EP begins with “Whoville”, a piano instrumental, and moves onto “Lights On”, an upbeat bop about coming home (for Christmas?) featuring Ryan Beatty and Santigold. Then there’s “Hot Chocolate” – featuring songwriter Jerry Paper – in which Tyler literally details how he likes his hot chocolate. Good to know.

Overall, the record does have a pretty christmassy feel – think bells and jazzy chord changes – but that doesn’t mean missing out on some classic Tyler, the Creator verses, either. Listen on Spotify.

Recently, Tyler’s Golf Wang fashion label also revealed new Grinch-themed shoes, in collaboration with Converse. The fuzzy kicks feature menacing Grinch eyes on the heel. Check those out below.

With Kendrick Lamar and his record label, Top Dawg Entertainment, producing the fantastic compilation album for Marvel Studios’ Black Panther, in February, and Tyler now releasing this Grinch inspired EP, can we expect more artist to pursue projects commissioned by movie studios?
