Sinead O’Connor is best known for her hit 90’s song Nothing Compares to You which is instantly recognisable even in today’s generation but what we probably don’t know about her, is the fact that she is somewhat of a chameleon when it comes to her faith and beliefs. Born an Irish Catholic, Sinead is nothing if not experimental. She controversially ripped up a photograph of the Pope back in 1992 on public US television and even legally changed her name to Magda Davitt to rid herself of “parental curses” last year and even converted to Buddhism at one point. After the viral US outburst, seven years later, she was ordained by a breakaway church in Lourdes which the Catholic Church did not recognise.
It has now come to attention that she has converted to Islam and is happy with herself on her Theologian journey and even happier after being given her first hijab. She expressed thanks to “all my Muslim brothers and sisters who have been so kind as to welcome me to Ummah”- the Islamic community.
She thanked her fans for supporting her choice on Twitter: “This is to announce that I am proud to have become a Muslim. This is the natural conclusion of any intelligent theologian’s journey. All scripture study leads to Islam. Which makes all other scriptures redundant. I will be given (another) new name. It will be Shuhada’”
Shuhada was also seen singing the Islamic call to prayer which was uploaded to twitter alongside her announcement standing next to Irish Imam Shaykh Dr Umar al-Qadri who posted the video of the singer. Possibly a bold statement from the 90’s singer and probably one which will cause a few rifts between religion and peace but then again, if she didn’t make us talk, she wouldn’t be Sinead.
