Right up there with Europe’s most prestigious music prizes are the annual MOBO awards. Having ran for over 20 years, the ceremony has not only cemented itself in music culture by assigning artists with international credibility, but has also played a major role in championing ‘Music of Black Origin’ and has been at the forefront of promoting equal representation within music. However, they are set to take a step down this year as the company have announced that the 2018 ceremony will not take place, but will return in 2019 “bigger and bolder”.
Last year saw grime take over, with wins from the likes of Giggs and Stormzy (who took home 3 seperate awards for Best Male, Best Album & Best Grime Act). Yet, it seems as though we will have to wait till 2019 to see if grime still rules the music world. The MOBO founder Kanya King has stated on Twitter that:
“We understand that the MOBO Awards will be missed this year but…the evolution of the MOBO Awards is always at the forefront of our mind and we want to ensure that we… continue to amplify the exposure of the large pool of exceptional talent celebrated by MOBO.”
Although it is true that the absence of the MOBO’s will leave a hole in the musical calendar, the organisation will still be operating in and around the arts in the meantime to “bring the platform to brand new heights” and continue their project. To do this, they plan to set in motion a “series of initiatives and events over the next 12 months in music, film and entrepreneurship …to build on the strong foundation of the brand and its heritage for a wider purpose and bigger impact.”
A few announcement have already been made, signalling what these ‘initiatives’ may be, including a new film production company (with the first project ‘The Hate U Give’ to be released later this year) and a special event at the British Library to celebrate some of the industry’s most inspirational individuals. So, even though the awards will not take place, MOBO is not taking a break by any means. They are set for an exciting year ahead and we can all wait in anticipation to see what new innovations this forward-thinking company has to offer the future music.
