As the Christmas countdown slowly ticks down, we can finally admit that the festive season has begun with this week’s reveal of the eagerly awaited John Lewis & Partners Christmas advert. It was revealed yesterday after months of speculation that this year’s Christmas advert would be the tale and celebration of the nation favourite, Elton John. Aptly named, ‘The Boy & The Piano’ the advert takes us a journey through the highlights of Elton’s career, from sell out arena shows in America to intimate performances for family and friends.
The ‘Candle in The Wind’ singer shot to fame in 1969 with his debut album, ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ and has had an impeccable career spanning almost 50 years. It was announced earlier this year that the singer would be retiring from live performance and has embarked on his final tour titled ‘Farewell Yellow Brick Road’ back in September. So, it seems that this year’s John Lewis & Partners advert is not only a festive-themed masterpiece, but an accolade to the singer’s prestigious musical career.
In the opening scene to the advert we bear witness to Elton sat at his piano surrounded by festivities as he begins to play the intro to 1970 hit and favourite, ‘Your Song’. The camera then pans round to an applauding audience where he begins to sing out to them the opening lyrics to the sentimental track. Throughout the entire advert we are shown various shots of the singer’s iconic dress-sense from Pink Mohicans to American-flag sequined jackets, which is the touch of class and sentimentality that John Lewis & Partners certainly prides themselves upon. The advert progresses back over the years to the very early years of the ‘Rocket Man’s career. With shots from the recording of the single, to singing in front of family at a party and in front of his class-mate parents on the exact piano we saw from the start, it’s these small touches that emphasise the extent of his breath-taking career.
The final scene from the advert sees a young Elton walking downstairs on Christmas morning to his mother and grandmother where he stands and unwraps his present, a piano. Finishing the advert in true John Lewis & Partners style, the last shot skims from a happy young Elton to him back in the present day smiling in retrospect as he plays the final note on that same piano. As the seen blacks out, the sentence “some gifts are more than just a gift” reads across the screen followed by the companies new branding.
Once again, John Lewis have set the competitive bauble rolling. Let’s see what everyone else has to offer up to this wholesome advertisement, and to whether this will become one of John Lewis & Partners most memorable Christmas adverts as a whole.
