The Australian has put out a new track, ahead of a European tour, included in a compilation for the 10 year anniversary of label Mom + Pop.
The album, which comes out on November 23, is a three-disc one and includes rarities, covers and greatest hits by other artists under Mom + Pop such as Andrew Bird singing Alpha Consumer’s ‘The Crown Salesman’.
Barnett’s ‘Small Talk’ was recorded during the sessions for her latest album ‘Tell Me How You Really Feel’, released earlier this year. The track features the classic, laid-back vibe that so much good has brought to the songwriter.
“It was tracked live and I had only just shown it to the band, so you can hear me calling out changes and making up a few lyrics on the spot,” said Barnett on her Twitter account.
“Do you have any siblings? / I got a brother, Blake, he’s four years older than me / And I guess he always will be / Yeah he’s clever and he’s got a cool girlfriend (hey Hayley) / Aw but wait, now that they’re engaged so I hope they have kids so I can be a cool aunty, yeah,” Barnett sings.
Her latest album, was the first one after her previous studio work ‘Lotta Sea Lice’ co-written with Kurt Vile, includes earworms such as ‘Need a Little Time’, ‘City Looks Pretty’ or ‘Charity’.
To celebrate the anniversary, Mom + Pop have are also putting up a show in Brooklyn, New York, on October 22, with performances by Sleigh Bells, Neon Indian, Alice Merton, Sunflower Bean, Tom Morello and Courtney Barnett herself.
The Melbourne-born is touring Europe and the UK later this year, with shows beginning next month in Berlin. In the UK, the singer will play seven dates including London at the Brixton Academy on November 14.
