The Chainsmokers And 5SOS, ‘Who Do You Love’ – Single Review

In an exploration of loving and loss, The Chainsmokers and 5 Seconds of Summer reach new levels in ‘Who Do You Love’. As the first single from the upcoming third The Chainsmokers LP TC3, ‘Who Do You Love’ is an EDM meets rock journey through a problematic relationship’s breakdown, whilst also feeling like a side character to your own misfortune.  This is more of the high quality production we expect from The Chainsmokers, although new territory for 5SOS. The ‘Youngblood’ singers are known for their indie-rock tracks, not EDM bangers.

However, 2018 was the year of venturing into ‘sad bangers’. Marshmello and Bastille teamed up for ‘Happier‘, an era and genre defining track. Mark Ronson and Miley Cyrus‘ ‘Nothing Breaks Like a Heart’ continues to dominate worldwide charts. It’s no surprise the Australian rock band have broadened their horizons and teamed up with world renowned hit makers. ‘Who Do You Love’ is a catchy bop with the potential to become a big summer hit. From heartfelt lyrics, to thumping beats contrasted with subtle guitar, this track has it all. It’s a cross-genre piece of work. However this also means it has the potential to disappoint both EDM and rock fans. Though, no one can say this isn’t catchy.

It’s likely we’ll see this grandiose ‘sad banger’ climbing the charts soon.

Who do you love, do you love now?
I wanna know the truth

On working with 5SOS, The Chainsmokers said: ‘We love those guys and much to our surprise when we first discovered them they are no boy band but a serious rock band so it was fun as hell working with their style and vibe and making this record what it is! ‘

The Chainsmokers Tour

More Chainsmokers collaborations will be coming in 2019, with the DJ duo confirming they’ve penned work with both Blink 182 and Juice WRLD. The Chainsmokers will be embarking on a 41 stop US Tour named World War Joy this Autumn. Joining the duo will be 5 Seconds of Summer and Lennon Stella. 5 Seconds of Summer faced considerable backlash from their fans for choosing to support a tour so far from their own genres. Front man Ashton Irwin has been the subject of much hate, however the band continue to remain resilient in their choice.
