Ariana Grande-Butera is an American singer, songwriter and actress who began her career in 2008 on Broadway. Her music career actually began in 2011 and has earned three number albums since then on the US Billboard 200 with Yours Truly (2013), My Everything (2014), and Sweetner (2018). Born in Boca Raton, Florida as a child, Grande performed with the Fort Lauderdale Children’s Theater, playing her first role as the title character in Annie. Her involvement in Broadway followed by some small TV parts, helped her land the role of Cat Valentine on the Nickelodeon television serious Victorious (2010-2013) and the spinoff Sam & Cat (2013-2014).
‘The Way’ was the first single from Grande’s debut album, Yours Truly. The album, created by legendary producer, Babyface, showed a maturing Grande and 1990s influences from pop diva Mariah Carey. As she has a four octave soprano range, she is usually compared to Mariah Carey because of her wide vocal range, sound and musical material. The 2014 release My Everything sold 169,000 copies in its first week, debuting at No.1. The single ‘Problem’, featuring Australian rapper Iggy Azalea, preceded the album release and debuted at No. 3 on Billboard’s Hot 100, selling more than 400,000 copies upon its release. The track debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart, becoming Grande’s first number one single in the UK and made British chart history as the first song to land at No. 1 based on sales and streams and was the highest debut ever for a collaboration of female soloists.
Her accolades include three American Music Awards, three MTV Europe Music Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards and four Grammy Award nominations. Three of her albums have been certified platinum by the RIAA and in 2016, was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world on Time magazine’s annual list and in 2018 was also named Women of the Year by Billboard.
